The butterfly effect is a poetic metaphor in the theory of chaos for the phenomenon of the sensitive dependence of a system on the initial conditions. According to one formulation, “if a butterfly flutters its wings in the Amazon, it could bring rain to China.” Different variants express essentially the same idea: an infinitesimal change in the course of events leads, over time, to a development in the history of the system that would be dramatically different from what would have happened if the change had not taken place.
